A sample page

Sagebrook Pediatrics is a fictional practice, and this page is part of a design portfolio. It follows the structure a real practice needs, but it is not legal advice and covers no real patient. About this site.

Our standard

We build and check this site against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. It is the standard the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services sets for health care providers that serve patients on Medicaid and the Oregon Health Plan, and we apply it to every page.

What we have done

  • Every page works with a keyboard alone, with a visible outline on whatever has focus.
  • Text and controls meet the WCAG contrast ratios: 4.5:1 for text, 3:1 for buttons, fields and icons.
  • Every page has one main heading, and headings follow in order, so a screen reader user can move through a page by heading.
  • Form fields have visible labels, and errors are described in words, not color alone.
  • Buttons and links are at least 44 by 44 pixels, so they are easy to tap.
  • Medicine dosing charts are real tables, with headers a screen reader announces.
  • Pages reflow to a single column at 320 pixels wide, and text can be enlarged to 200% without loss.
  • Animations are short, and they are switched off if your device asks for reduced motion.
  • Images that carry meaning have text alternatives. There is no autoplaying video or audio, and nothing on the site has a time limit.

How we check

We test with automated checks, by using every page with a keyboard only, and on phones, tablets and desktops at every common screen size. We check each new page before it is published.

Known limitations

  • The map on our Contact page comes from Google, and we cannot fully control how it behaves with assistive technology. Our address, parking notes and a directions link are on the same page as plain text.
